Drivers

DRIVER EDUCATION

Students receive the classroom portion of driver education when they enroll in Health/PE/Driver Education10. Once a student has successfully completed the classroom portion of driver education and obtained his or her learner's permit, the student may sign up for behind-the-wheel training. This is offered through various outside companies. The school does not require students to enroll or successfully complete behind-the-wheel instruction, but it is required in order to obtain a driver's license if under the age of 18.

Students must request a form (green card) from the guidance office prior to starting behind-the-wheel.

Students must also be in "good standing" in order to receive administrative approval for obtaining a permit/license.

MOTOR VEHICLES

Driving a motor vehicle on school property is a privilege, not a right. Locker content rules apply to the content of vehicles. All vehicles must be registered. If students use more than one vehicle, each vehicle must be registered. Car registration is handled through the main office. The cost for car registration is $15.00. When the fee is paid, a parking pass will be issued. This pass must be displayed on the rear-view mirror whenever the vehicle is parked on school grounds. Replacement parking passes will be reissued for $15.00.

Students who park in unauthorized areas, park on school grounds without an FCHS parking pass, or fail to display the student parking pass, are subject to the following consequences:
1st offense: Warning on vehicle and license plate recorded.
2nd offense: Discipline referral and parent contact.
3rd offense: Loss of parking privileges for 10 days and parent contact.
4th offense: Vehicle towed at owner's expense and loss of parking privileges for the remainder of the school year.
All other parking and driving rules are given out when students register vehicles. Students are not permitted in the parking lot during the school day, including lunch, without permission from the administration or an early dismissal note from the office.

Student drivers are not to transport other high school students to and from school without permission of both students' parents/guardians AND they must be on the rider/driver form.

If there is an accident between student vehicles in the student parking lot or anywhere on school property, the administration is to be notified at once. An accident form must be filled out and filed in the office.

The administration reserves the right to suspend and/or revoke parking privileges for any student.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

It is our goal to transport all children to and from school safely and all school related activities safely and free from harm. All students who ride a school bus are subject to and expected to abide by the laws, rules, and regulations set by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Fluvanna County School Board. The driver is in charge of the bus and students who ride the bus. The student must accept the authority of the driver and cooperate with his or her requests. At anytime, a parent conference may be required by the principal or his designee before a student can return to the bus. Riding a school bus is a privilege. Abuse of this privilege will not be tolerated.

Fighting, hazing, harassment, intimidations, use of/or possession of tobacco products, forgery of bus note, theft, vandalism, use or possession of lasers, spitballs, fireworks or stink bombs will result in out-of-school suspension and possible loss of bus riding privilege.

Defacing or damaging the bus will result in 10 days out-of-school suspension and a recommendation to the Principal for loss of riding privilege for the remainder of the school year.

Use of profane, vulgar, obscene, or abusive language or gestures will result in a one day loss of bus privilege on the first offense, a three day loss of bus privilege on the first offense, a three day loss of bus privilege on the second offense and five day loss of bus privilege for a third offense.

The following behavior will result in a 1-3 day loss of bus privilege on the first offense and 3-5 days loss of bus privilege on the second offense. Students will not receive a warning.
  1. Disrespectful behavior / disruptive behavior
  2. Unauthorized boarding or exiting a bus.
Violations of all other school bus rules will result in the following consequences:
  1. Warning by the bus driver
  2. Warning by an administrator (if warranted)
  3. 3-5 day loss of privilege
  4. 5-10 day loss of privilege
  5. 10 day loss of privilege and a behavioral contract developed
  6. 12 day loss of privilege with recommended loss of privilege for the entire school year.
Students are not allowed to use cell phones, walkman/MP3's or other audio devices while riding the bus.

Not every possible act of misconduct may be listed; however, this does not mean that the behavior is acceptable. The administration reserves the right to take disciplinary and/or legal action. Please note: school rules also apply at the bus stop.

The school reserves the right to amend the aforementioned policies and the announcements of such changes will be deemed as notification.
