WORLD HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY I HONORS -This course is an in-depth study of history and geography from the beginning of time to 1500 AD. Students will research topics related to the time period and interpret historical documents in context with their studies.  Emphasis will be place on the people, places, and events of the time period using the needed vocabulary.  Students who wish to prepare for more advanced courses in Social Studies are encouraged to take this course.  Pre-requisite: A or B in the last social studies taken and teacher recommendation.

WORLD HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY II HONORS - This course is an in-depth study of history and geography from 1500 AD to the present.  Students will write research papers on events and people of the period as well as analyze and interpret historical documents.  Students who wish to take a more advanced study of World History are encouraged to take this course.  Pre-requisite: A or B in World History

WORLD STUDIES - This ninth grade course for students enrolled in the BRVGS covers the required SOL content of World History/Geography I and II. They will also investigate the emerging world through technology. Students will earn two credits and be in the course for both semesters.

UNITED STATES AND VIRGINIA HISTORY - This course presents a survey of history from the Colonial Period through the early 1990’s. This course may be taught in a traditional classroom setting or optionally in the U. S. History Lab.  The U. S. History Lab offers a self-paced computer based program of study over a one-semester period.-11TH GRADE

PVCC HISTORY - This course surveys the history of the United States and Virginia from its beginning to the present.  Successful completion of this class awards a student one high school credit as well as six college credits through Piedmont Virginia Community College. (These college credits may or may not be transferable.)  This course carries one high school credit and 6 college credits.  Pre-requisite: Passage of the PVCC Assessment Test.

AP US HISTORY - AP U.S. History is designed to develop the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials concerning the history of the United States. The class prepares students for intermediate college courses by demanding skills equivalent to those acquired in a full-year introductory college program. Students will learn to assess historical material according to relevance, reliability, and importance by weighing the evidence presented in historical scholarship. AP U.S. History develops the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions based on informed judgment and the ability to present evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format. This course includes materials from discovery and settlement to present day America.  This course may be taught online and last all year or taught as a one-semester course.  Prerequisite: Students should have above average ability and maturity as a great deal of independent work is necessary. Prerequisite: Students must submit the Governor’s Early Scholars Agreement prior to enrollment into this course  *STUDENTS MUST TAKE EITHER THE SOL TEST OR AP EXAMINATION.

UNITED STATES AND VIRGINIA GOVERNMENT - This course presents an in-depth study of the foundation of United States and Virginia Government and examines local, state, and national levels of government.  12TH GRADE  Must have successfully completed US and VA History.

PVCC GOVERNMENT - This course teaches the structure, operation, and process of national, state, and local governments.  It includes an in-depth study of the three branches of the government and of public policy.  Successful completion of this course gives a student one high school credit and six college credits from Piedmont Virginia Community College. (These college credits may or may not be transferable)  Pre-requisite: Passage of the PVCC Assessment Test.

AP US GOVERNMENT - This is a course designed for the student who accepts the challenge of an advanced class in government.   Students will be expected to master all of the objectives of the Curriculum Framework for Virginia and U.S. Government.   In addition, analytical writing will be required, both in essays developed within the framework of the class and in papers developed as a result of research assignments.   In May, students will take an Advanced Placement Government Examination.   With a satisfactory score, students may be eligible to receive some college credit.  THIS MAY BE A ONE SEMESTER COURSE AND/OR TAUGHT OVER THE INTERNET. Prerequisite: Students must submit the Governor’s Early Scholars Agreement prior to enrollment into this course
