Announcing the Commonwealth Leadership Institute at Christopher Newport University for rising High School Seniors on July 5-16. This two week residential program on the campus of CNU costs $1750 for three undergraduate college credits, housing and meals for two weeks, and all materials and activities. Deadline to apply is Jan. 13 in order for the school to complete their part of the application. Attention Female Juniors and Seniors: UVa extends an invitation to female students interested in the career field of engineering. The High School Visitation Weekend will be Feb. 21-22 with a cost of $35 to cover all activity fees, meals and accommodations. The Washington D.C. Joint Steamfitting Apprenticeship Committee announces apprenticeship opportunities in heating, air conditioning, refrigeration process piping and environmental systems fields. Deloitte Virtual Team Challenge Spill: The Virtual Team Challenge is an exciting digital learning program offered at no cost to schools. This fun, simulation team game teaches students business as they learn math, decision-making and environmental skills. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winning schools (or organizations), teachers and students, and donations to the local United Way will be made in the winners' honor. Awards Program Open: The Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards Program, one of the world's largest K -12 science and technology competitions, is now accepting entries for its 2009 competition. For the past 16 years, the ExploraVision program has provided an opportunity for students to envision a better future and has given educators a valuable tool for helping motivate their students to excel in science. The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) announces the 2009 Thacher Scholars Award to be given to secondary students in grades 9-12 who demonstrate the best use of geospatial technologies or data to study Earth. StudentEdge is a free online resource center that simplifies college and career planning by putting everything you need in one location. “A Day in the Life” tutoring program will be starting this week in Charlottesville for students who are in need of extra assistance. The contact information is given below. This program attempts to pair students with a UVA student for tutoring. Sometimes the assistance is on – on-one other times it is small group. Check out this new website: www.mycollegetracker.com. This FREE web-based toll will help you organize vital information, compare college and send you email reminders beginning 3 weeks before a due date. It also contains tips on the application process, references for financial aid, sample letters SAT and Act pre materials.
The University of Alabama announces beginning with the fall 2010 entering freshman class the writing component of the Act and Sat will be required and used in the evaluation of borderline applicants. Also paper application will no longer be printed. Applicants will either apply online or print a PDF offline at http://apply.ua.edu
University of Richmond announces the deadline to be considered for the Richmond Scholars is Dec. 15, Winter Early Decision and Regular Decision is Jan 15th and Need-Based Aid Deadline is Feb. 15th. The Richmond Scholars Program offers full tuition for up to 50 students along with a $3000 one-time grant. This is a merit based program.
The EDU,Inc. Common Black College Application allows you to apply to all 33 member institutions for a one time fee of $35 dollars. In Virginia, the member colleges are: Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, Norfolk State University. You may complete this application online at: www.eduinconline.com.
Davidson College announces the Davidson Trust for students to meet 100 percent of demonstrated need through a combination of grants and student employment; no loan component is included. In 2007 Davidson became the first liberal arts college to eliminate student loans from all financial aid packages. To get more information log on to www.davidson.edu.
Seniors - did you know that nearly 350 colleges across the US accept the COMMON APPLICATION. UVA for the first time will be accepting only this application for prospective students entering in the Fall of 2009. Complete the application one-time either online or via paper/pencil and then photocopy for each of the schools to which you wish to apply that accept The Common Application. The online application is available at www.commonapp.org. Make sure that if the college you apply to with this application has a supplemental form that you submit that as well. In Virginia the college that do accept this application are: William and Mary, Hampden-Sydney, Hollins, Randolph, Sweet Briar, U of Mary Washington, U of Richmond, U of Virginia, and Washington and Lee.

University of Dayton, a top 10 national Catholic University offers more than 70 academic programs in four accredited divisions. Students with a minimum GPA of B and SAT or ACT scores within a certain range are eligible to receive scholarship assistance in the amounts of $20,000 to $100,00 distributed over four years. Bridgewater College announces its Open House dates for the 2008-09 school year. If you attend one of these sessions and bring your completed Bridgewater application, the $30 application fee will be waived. Also if you apply online the application fee will also be waived. United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship Program announces $1000 grants to be awarded to students continuing their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities, and vocational schools. Log on to www.usjcisenate.org to get an application or email scholarship@cox.net and request a copy via email. Deadline for submission is Dec. 31.
The CAP Charitable Foundation (USA) announces the availability of the 2008-09 Ron Brown Scholar Program. This program awards scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African American students who are currently seniors in high school and plan to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time. Application deadlines is Jan 9th to be considered only for the Ron Brown program. Application is available at www.ronbrown.org
The Lee Jackson Scholarship Program announces three $1,000 scholarships to be awarded in each of the eight Superintendents’ Regional Study Groups. Application and criteria is available at www.lee-jackson.org. This competition requires submission of an essay by either a junior or senior. The topic of the essay deals with two of Virginia’s most outstanding military figures, General Robert E. Lee and General “Stonewall” Jackson. Students must submit an application and essay to Mary Bright by January Wednesday Jan. 14th. The submitted essays will be given to the school superintendent who will select the 5 best and submit them to the competition committee..
Applications for the Paul Bragg Scholarship are now available in the Guidance Office Career Center. This year 4 scholarships will be given away. One for $40,000, one for $10,000 and two for $2,500 each. Don’t delay in picking up the application. Deadline for submission is March 31.
Students: Remember the time to complete the FAFSA ( Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is rapidly approaching. Students are encouraged to complete the application as soon after Jan 1 as possible. Apply online at: www.fafsa.gov or download a PDF version of the application at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov ( this must be mailed for processing) or request a paper FAFSA by calling 1-800-433-3243.
Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund announces it scholarship application is now available. Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and plan to enroll in a 4-yr college or university next year. Application and information is available in the Career Center. Deadline: March 31.
Virginia Credit Union's Dorothy J. Hall Scholarship is now accepting applications to receive one of 25 scholarships for up to $2500. To apply you must be a primary member of the Virginia Credit. Deadline: march 31. Pick up applications in the Career Center if you qualify.
The Virginia Department of Aviation announces scholarship opportunities for high school seniors considering a career in the aviation industry. Log on to www.doav.virginia.gov to get additional information about the following: John R. Lillard VAOC Scholarship Program in the amount of $3000 (Deadline: Feb. 20) and the Plentl Aviation Scholarship Program in the amount of $1000 (deadline: Feb. 20) and Paul Galanti Scholarship and Rudy Howell Scholarship worth $100 each ( deadline March 1)
AXA Achievement Community Scholarship offers up to $750,000 in scholarships. Ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family, and community, ability to succeed in college are needed to apply for a $2000 scholarship. Washington and Lee University announces the Johnson Scholarship Program and the Johnson Program in Leadership and Integrity. This scholarship program provided awards of at least tuition, room and board to up to 44 students in the incoming class on the basis of academic achievement and leadership potential. The National Commission for Cooperative Education announces the National Co-op Scholarship. 200 merit co-op scholarships in the amounts of $6,000 each will be awarded to students who apply and are accepted at one of the 10 NCCE Partner college And Universities. They include: C.W. Post, Johnson & Wales, Northeastern University, Rochester Institute of Technology, U of Toledo, Drexel, Kettering, Pace, U of Cincinnati and Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Gloria Bell and Carlos Bell Scholarship Program at U of Michigan announces scholarship monies totaling $80,000 over 4 four years of undergraduate student to selected student from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Vanderbilt University announces a need-blind admissions process where 100% of a students demonstrated financial need is met for all admitted and returning undergraduates. Beginning with the fall of 2009, need-based financial aid packages offered to entering undergraduate students will not include need-based loans. Tenaska Scholarship Program announces scholarships in the amount of either $500 or $1000 to attend either a 4-year or 2-year college or university. Application deadline is Feb. 2. Information is available in the high school guidance office.
2008-09 National Peace Essay Contest topic, "Confronting Crimes Against Humanity" and the scholarship prizes available to your students. In a 1,500 word essay, students will have the opportunity to reflect on modern cases of crimes against humanity--such as Darfur and Rwanda--as well as historical examples of genocide, including the Holocaust. Each state winner receives a $1,000 scholarship, an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC for the week-long Awards Program, and the chance to win national awards up to $10,000. Intermarkets-Lucido Journalism Scholarship is a $5000 scholarship to high school seniors in Virginia who will be choosing journalism as their major. Application deadline is April 3. Log on to www.intermarkets.net/scholarship/index,html for the application.
2008 KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program announces scholarships of up to $5000 per year for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. You must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher, be enrolling in a public in-state college or university next fall. Radford University announces the Nancy Pridemore and GeorgeAnne Buck Scholarships for Theatre and Cinema students entering the college in the Fall 2009. Must have a strong commitment to theatre and a demonstrated academic record of excellence. Must have at least a 3.3 GPA and SAT’s of 1100 or higher (combined Math and Critical Reading). You must submit a completed Radford University application by Jan. 23 to be considered.
The National MS Society announces a scholarship program to help students who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis or who have a parent with MS to achieve their dreams of going to college. The Washington Scholars Program at University of Mary Washington is a full scholarship given to two high school seniors who will pursue their academic careers at UMW. You must submit your application and supporting documentation for Honors Admission by Jan. 15th.
McKelvey Foundation announces a $40,000 Entrepreneurial Scholarship award for seniors who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school. You must be a high school senior planning on continuing your education at a 4-year college and have at least one paid employee. Apply online at www.mckelveyfoundation.org by Jan 25.
The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program announces scholarships in amounts from $1,500 to $18,000. A prepared oration on an assigned topic is designed to test the speaker’s knowledge of a subject, the extent of research performed, and the ability to discuss the topic as related to the basic principles of government under the Constitution. Great Value Food Stores announces the 2008-09 Great Scholarships for Great Students program. A $1000 scholarship will be awarded by the Fork Union Great Value to a student within the community as part of this program. Applications are only available at the Great Value Store locations. Deadline: March 1.

Burger King Scholars Program is accepting applications for scholarship awards of $1000 to be used for educational expenses during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Davis & Elkins College Theatre Program is seeking talented high school seniors to become part of their active program. Substantial Theatre Talent Scholarship Grants in Acting and/or Design/Technical Theatre are available to qualifying students. Grants range in amount from $1000.00 to $6500.00 per year and are renewable for up to four years. You may pick up information in the Guidance Career Center.
Virginia Military Institute offers full and partial scholarships to students entering each year that cover the cost of tuition and fees for up to eight semesters of full time study. Pick up information about these scholarship opportunities in the Guidance Career Center.
Seniors, put Sat. Jan. 31, 2009 on your calendars for the Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Super Saturday. College bound students will receive free assistance in completing the FAFSA online and at each site workshops on financial aid will be provided. Randolph College, in Lynchburg, Virginia announces the Presidential Scholars Merit Scholarship. If you have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership qualities you may be eligible to be nominated for one of these prestigious awards. Other merit and need-based awards are available. The Virginia Chapter of the American Fire Sprinkler Association (ADSA) is sponsoring a scholarship contest for high school seniors. Awards range from $500 to $1500. Announcing the 2009 Gates Millennium Scholars Program Application process. One thousand minority students with an un-weighted GPA of 3.3 or higher, will be a first year /first time college student in the fall of 09, have demonstrated leadership abilities, meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria, and submit the required three parts of the application by the required deadline of Jan. 12, 2009 we be considered to receive this scholarship award. Since the beginning of the program, over $425 million dollars have been awarded to over 12,000 students. Funding is renewable for up to 5 years of college education.
