Recruitment Fair
February 14, 2025

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, for a scheduled holiday.

Dear FLUCO staff, parents, students and community,
I want to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, the software vendor which provides our Student Information System (SIS).
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed our leadership team that they experienced a nationwide cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to thousands of PowerSchool SIS customers’ data. The unofficial timeline of this incident occurred between 12/19/2024 - 12/28/2024. PowerSchool is actively investigating this incident with its incident response team. They have confirmed that some of the information belongs to some of our families and educators but because this is an ongoing investigation cannot confirm all who have been impacted. Ultimately, this was a breach of PowerSchool's systems and we are subject to their investigative timelines. Powerschool will be providing an official report once their investigation is completed.
PowerSchool informed us that the taken data primarily includes student, parent and teacher contact information with data elements such as name and address information. Across their customer base, they have determined that for a portion of individuals, some personally identifiable information (PII), such as social security numbers (SSN), was impacted. They assure us that they are working with urgency to complete their investigation and determine whether PII belonging to our students or teachers was included.
FCPS does not store Social Security Numbers for students in PowerSchool. FCPS does not store Social Security Numbers for staff except for teachers who are waiting for their provisional license. We are communicating with those few specific individuals whose SSN’s have potentially been compromised.
Protecting our students and teachers is something we take very seriously. PowerSchool has implemented safeguards to prevent this incident from occurring again from their end. Additionally, FCPS has verified that our data network, and server environment has not been compromised. Additionally we have implemented a password change for all PowerSchool staff accounts to make sure no Powerschool account credentials have been compromised. Parent PowerSchool accounts are view-only and thus do not require a password reset.
With PowerSchool’s help, more information and resources (including credit monitoring or identity protection services if applicable) will be provided to you as it becomes available. FCPS will share additional information as we receive it.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Peter M. Gretz, Ed.D.
Division Superintendent

PowerSchool, PowerTeacher, and the Parent Portal will be down for system maintenance on Thursday, January 2nd, from 8:00PM to 11:00PM.

Happy Holidays from FMS!
