FLUVANNA COUNTY, Virginia - On Thursday, April 24, 2025, sixteen Fluvanna students in Grades 3 through 6 competed in the Region 24 Math Tournament, held in Orange County. Our students played in front of a crowded gymnasium full of fans from multiple districts across the region and did a phenomenal job!
Participants play the 24 Math Game, which involves a deck of cards, each showing four whole numbers between 1 and 9. When presented with a card, the players strive to be the first to combine the four numbers to make 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In addition to supporting pattern recognition, mental math, and problem-solving abilities, this game has proven to elicit a high level of interest and excitement in math from students.
Out of the sixteen students, six Flucos moved on to the semifinal rounds! We congratulate sixth grader Joshua Esch on placing 2nd in his grade level division and fourth grader Benjamin Lavallee on placing 3rd in his grade level division! Our coaching staff for the Math 24 tournament consisted of Amy Hartwell, Erin Edwards, and William Reese. Our proctors were Sheryl Hopper and Amanda Fisher. We thank everyone for their passion and commitment to this team.
