FLUVANNA COUNTY, VA — The Fluvanna County School Board is proud to announce the appointment of Jessica Carter as the new Head Coach of the Fluvanna Girls Basketball program. A decorated player, accomplished coach, and tireless advocate for young women, Coach Carter brings an extraordinary combination of competitive excellence, community roots, and proven leadership to the Flucos program.

A Troy, Virginia native, Carter’s basketball journey began right here in Central Virginia. As a member of Charlottesville High School’s 2001 State Championship team — which finished with a perfect 28–0 record — she earned All-District honors and set the foundation for a standout collegiate career. At Mary Baldwin University, Carter became one of the most accomplished players in program history, finishing as the all-time leading scorer with 1,943 career points. Her excellence on the court earned her NCAA Division III All-American Honorable Mention recognition and, ultimately, induction into the Mary Baldwin University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Coach Carter’s coaching career spans every level of the game. She has served as an Assistant Coach at the collegiate level with Mary Baldwin University’s NCAA Division III women’s program and has built deep experience at the high school, middle school, AAU travel, and community recreation levels.

In 2020, Carter founded HER Sports, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls through sports, leadership, and mentorship across Central Virginia. As Founder and Executive Director, she has built basketball leagues, clinics, camps, and mentorship programs from the ground up — creating pathways for young women who might otherwise lack access to high-quality athletic development. Her work earned her the 2025 Best in Cville Award for Youth Development, the Ready Kids Youth Advocate Award, and a Toyota & ESPN Everyday Hero recognition.

Beyond basketball, Carter’s professional background reflects a deep and lasting commitment to youth and community. She holds a Master’s Degree in Health & Wellness Counseling from Liberty University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Mary Baldwin University. Her career has included roles as a Case Management Counselor, Student Support Liaison for Charlottesville City Schools, Child & Family Case Manager, and Co-Owner of XtraMile Youth Services — a youth development organization she co-founded and has led since 2019. She has also served on the Board of Directors for City of Promise and brings a trauma-informed, relationship-centered approach to every room she enters.

Coach Carter’s arrival signals an exciting new chapter for Fluvanna Girls Basketball. She is committed to building a program grounded in accountability, relationships, and toughness — on the court and in life. With her deep ties to the local basketball community, a proven ability to develop players at every level, and a heart for mentorship, Coach Carter is uniquely positioned to elevate the Flucos program and inspire the next generation of Fluvanna student-athletes.

"A new season begins with new leadership, new opportunities, and new dreams. We are excited to welcome Coach Jessica Carter as she leads our Girls Basketball Program into its next chapter of growth and excellence,” says Principal Mrs. Margo Bruce.
